OpenAI just updated ChatGPT’s web search feature — and naturally, I had to test it on something serious: finding a CO₂ dense phase pump.

ChatGPT’s update focuses on improving product discovery directly within the chat window. Users can now see images, reviews, and direct links to purchase — all without ads cluttering the results. OpenAI says the update targets categories like fashion, electronics, beauty, and home goods. It’s their move to compete with traditional search engines by offering a faster, more natural product search experience.

But what happens when you try to use it for industrial equipment?

I put it to the test.I asked ChatGPT to find a CO₂ dense phase centrifugal pump, a highly specialized item not exactly stocked in everyday online catalogs.Despite the update being aimed at consumer goods, ChatGPT still delivered:

  • It quickly provided vendor names,

  • Suggested brochures,

  • And linked me to legitimate equipment pages — no ads, no paid placements.

Where it falls short:While it did offer useful information for my technical search, it’s clear that the current focus is heavily weighted toward consumer products. Categories like pumps, compressors, and specialized industrial gear are not yet deeply integrated into the structured shopping results.

Bottom Line:Even though ChatGPT’s new shopping search isn’t fully built for industrial applications yet, it’s already proving surprisingly useful for engineers — especially when you craft a precise, technical query. For now, being specific and detailed in your search prompt is critical to getting high-quality results.

Takeaway for Engineers

If you need quick technical references, product brochures, or vendor leads, ChatGPT’s upgraded search can save significant time — but expect better results when you help it by framing your search clearly.

Tip: Include technical specs or standards (e.g., pressure rating, flowrate range) in your prompt for sharper results.
