Continuing Professional Development of a Professional Engineer in Canada

Purpose: This report serves as a guide to understanding and complying with CPD requirements for Professional Engineers in Canada.


Regulatory Bodies and CPD Requirements:


  1. Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)

    1. EGBC has a three-year CPD cycle.

      1. You need 240 CPD hours in three years, with an average of 80 hours each year.

    2. CPD activities are divided into six categories:

      1. Technical: Related to your job. Here is a list of events.

      2. Non-Technical: Helps your professional growth but not directly related to your job.

      3. Professional Responsibility: Covers ethics, laws, and rules.

      4. Communication and Leadership: Focus on improving communication and leadership skills.

      5. Project and Personnel Management: About managing projects or people.

      6. Career Development: Activities supporting your career progress.

    3. Minimum Requirements:

      1. 90 CPD hours in the Technical category.

      2. The other 150 hours can be from any category.

    4. Recording CPD:

      1. Keep records of activity name, date, time, category, and proof.

  2. Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta

    1. Professional Engineers in Alberta have a three-year CPD cycle.

      1. The required CPD hours depend on your registration category and status.

    2. CPD Categories:

      1. Technical. Here is a list of events.

      2. Personal Development

      3. Business & Project Management

    3. Minimum Technical Hours:

      1. You need to earn a minimum number of CPD hours in the Technical category, which relates to your field.

    4. Acceptable CPD Activities:

      1. Many activities count, like courses, workshops, writing, mentoring, and more.

      2. Self-learning, professional association involvement, and teaching also count.

    5. Recording CPD:

      1. Engineers must keep records, noting activity name, date, time, provider, and category.

  3. Engineers PEI

    1. Engineers in PEI have a one-year CPD cycle.

      1. They need to earn at least 30 CPD hours each year.

    2. CPD Categories:

      1. Category 1 - Formal CPD Activities. Here is a list of events.

      2. Category 2 - Informal CPD Activities: Self-study and on-the-job learning.

    3. Minimum Requirements:

      1. 20 CPD hours from Category 1.

      2. Up to 10 CPD hours from Category 2.

    4. Recording CPD:

      1. Engineers should keep accurate records, including activity names, dates, durations, and any proof.
